I like to troll around CNN.com every day, keeping up with current events and checking trends - believe it or not, it helps with collection development! In between potential Supreme Court Justice Kagan's approval hearings and Lindsay Lohan's incarceration, I came across this story:
Kim Kardashian writes like James Joyce
Who knew?!
According to this article, there is a website that will analyze a small writing sample to see which famous author's style matches yours. The developer of this site, Dmitry Chestnykh, a Russian software programmer, created this in an effort to encourage people to write. I haven't tried it yet, and I'm curious to see whose style I favor. I'd like to think Ann Hood, Elizabeth Berg, Anne Tyler or Anna Quindlen but that's probably aiming too far. So far a few of my friends are reporting HP Lovecraft or Stephen King...and how does that reflect on my choices for friends?! Creative but with a dark side?
Already an alternative site, I Actually Write Like provides comic relief (or deflates your ego), with descriptions such as "you write like an adolescent goth". After I get the courage to try the first, and depending on the results, I may try the second. I'm not saying I have the Great American Novel in me, but I'd settle for middle-aged romantic.
(postscript)
OK, I sent in a sample, turns out I write like Chuck Palahniuk...you know, Fight Club Chuck Palahniuk?!
